Sniper Doctrine/Function
« on: January 03, 2009, 06:54:10 PM »
Forward
I was doing some thought while reading Gunnery Sergeant Coughlin’s book “Shooter” which is about the author’s experiences in Iraq. The author spends an awful lot of time describing his concept of a mobile sniper team using Humvees.

Sniper/Marksman function and Doctrine.

I have done some thought and come up with some theory based on historical/airsoftorical uses of the sniper/marksman. I have come up with types of sniper/marksman.

The first sniper is the classical role of the sniper. This is the lone wolf/with a spotter. Snipers have functioned this way since the Revolutionary War. The lone wolf (And his spotter if the sniper has one) acts independently from his squad. He/She provides the squad a valuable asset for recon/observation of the enemy, and the elimination of enemy targets. These snipers must use every available asset such as ghille suits.

Ideal Load out for the lone wolf and his/her spotter are as follows:

Sniper
Bolt-action 350-550 FPS Rifle with 3 or more mags and a 4X32 or 3-9x40 scope and a bipod.
Ghillie suit.
Sidearm (In the case of the lone wolf I would take a small AEG like an MP7 or an MP5K PDW or a Tri-shotgun with no stock for close encounters instead of a pistol)
Radio

Spotter
AEG with three or more mags
Low (Less than 16X) binoculars
Ghillie Suit
Gas or electric pistol with two or more mags.
Radio

The second type of sniper is the hunter killer team sniper. The hunter killer team should consist of three or more people. In a squad of 3 there should be two AEG armed people and one sniper. In a team of five there should be two snipers with three AEG armed people. This is similar to what the Germans did in World War 2. The hunter killer team should seek out enemy targets of opportunity and take them out. The hunter killer team

Hunter killer Sniper load out
BDUs/MARPAT/ACU/ODS/MULTICAM etc…
Bolt-action Sniper rifle with scope and bipod
Three or more mags for sniper rifle
Sidearm
Radio

Two or more mags for sidearm
Radio
Hunter killer AEG armed infantry
MARPAT/ACU/MULTICAM/BDUs/ODS/etc…
AEG
3 or more mags for AEG
Sidearm
Two or more mags for sidearm
Radio

Flank guard/Recon team sniper
This guy will function as part of forward or rear team that protects the main force against enemy assaults on the flanks. He functions in a team that has the same characteristics  and size of a hunter killer team. He provides recon information and the whereabouts of enemy forces to his commander.

Loadout for the Flank guard/Recon team sniper should be similar to that of a hunter killer team sniper. The loadout for the infantrymen of the flank guard/recon team sniper should be similar to that of a spotter with the exception of the ghillie suit.

The next role for a sniper is a squad specialized marksman. This marksman hits targets in a squad that regular AEG armed  infantrymen cannot hit. He also acts as the eyes of the commander and scans the area with his scope for enemy activity.

Loadout for the sniper should be similar to that of a hunter killer sniper. The AEG armed infantrymen should have their loadouts as a normal AEG armed infantryman would be armed.

The final role for a sniper would be that of a regular infantryman/medic. I do not think that I need explain what a regular infantryman or medic is. I saw sniper rifles being applied to the use of a medic/infantrymen’s duties.

The loadout for the regular infantryman/medic should be similar to that of a Hunter killer team sniper.

Now for the poll. Vote which type of sniper you are and/or like the best.
