Marksman vs. Sniper
« on: June 14, 2008, 09:39:28 PM »
It seems to me that a common misconception is that a marksman is the same as a sniper, and vice-versa. Not trying to flame anyone, just putting in my two sense. Both are equally important, I just want to see who agres with me.

A sniper. Ah yes. Every HVT's worst nightmare, and a very valuable combat asset, in terms of recon and selected elimination. A sniper is a very valuable asset to the team when little is known about the enemies approach or concentration.

A marksman, though similar, does have it's differences. I myself have had experience as a marksman, and my role was to provide medium to long range (via scoped sniper rifle), accurate and dealy covering fire for the rest of my squad. Moving with that frontline squad, and participating in ANY maneuvers.

I feel that the only real difference between a marksman and sniper is how you choose to employ your skills.

well after much debate we agreed to use the term marksman when refering to a sniper for airsoft.
hope this clears it up.
yeah i agree most of the time the snipers are deployed in a marksman style.
most of the games we play as are short that employing the sniper skill set are hard to do in such a short time.
hopefully in the future we will have some more sniper style games.

sharpshooter is a word used with a person who is very good and accurate with a weapon(pistol, rifle, shotgun).  marksman i would probably define as a person who has the capability to act a snipers role but uses their skills more like a rifleman with extended range and better camoflage.   But for airsoft i do agree with the above statement by Ghost and the rest of mag.  nobody really does any "sniping"  i.e. creeping into position over a long period of time avoiding detection and completing a kill to a high profile/hostile target.  the game moves to fast.

I consider a marksman as a person with a highly upgraded AEG (UsuallyM14 or M16 or H&K 91 400+ fps, mosfet, semi-auto only, and a tightbore)  amd acts more like a regular infantrymen while a sniper typically uses a 450+ fps bolt action and sneaks around doing recon and picking off targets of observation.

I know it is an old post, but for the benefit of people who may run into this: in airsoft games that rarely last more than a few hours a "sniper" (As in Foxbite's definition) would be very ineffective. It seems to me that everybody with a sniper is a marksman.

That's exactly what Ghost said. You bumped this to repeat Ghost, Spartan Assault's most respected Marksman on the field?

A note:
Though in a game that is played for (a vietnam reenaction game, for example) longer then the short  scenario's we do on Sunday's, a sniper (as defined by Foxbite) could be a very valuable resource.

I don't know how, but apparently I scanned right over that post when I read this thread. My bad, no disrespect to Ghost.

Ahem. In the world of photography, design and artistic engineering, Stock Photography is a respectable aspect.
Wikipedia has a page on it.
