Hello- I'm new to airsoft and looking to get started.
« on: July 08, 2010, 08:17:19 PM »
Hello, from my nick, you can probably guess my name is Wes. I've lightly toyed around with airsoft guns over the past few years, but only recently have I done some research about how actual airsoft is played. I just bought a third generation JG T3, as well as all of the gear I should need to get started, like good goggles with some defog spray, a smart charger, extra high capacity magazine, and some high grade BB's.

I doubt I'll have the T3 by the time I'd like to start airsofting, because I bought it on pre-order, but I saw that I can rent one, and I'll be able to use my extra magazine. I live about an hour away from the field, but I'll be within just a few miles the first week of August. I'd like to attend an event on Sunday the 1st, but that's only a possibility right now. It's likely I'll attend an event at a later date.

I've read thoroughly through the rules of how to play, and how to maintain the guns. It's likely that I will not do very well at first, because I am used to a totally different form of combat, that being firing single shot foam dart guns, which fire anywhere from 120-500 fps, with a 50-150 foot range, depending on the model and how it's been tuned (this is a strange, rare form of "nerf"). It's fast paced and played in mostly open spaces.

I'm very excited to get started, and I'll probably be gaming there soon!

Wow I've never heard of a 500 FPS dart gun, I remember having ones that were like one hundred tops but that's insane. Anyway, the G3 that's for rent uses more MP5 like Mags, you can look it up on the internet and you'll see what I mean, just so you know.

Anyways, welcome!

It's just an Mp5, hence the Mp5 is a descendant of the G3. But whatever, lets not get off topic

Well, since some of you were curious, I'll provide links to the sort of Nerf brand, competing brands, and various products achieve the high velocity. This hobby has only lightly been recorded with a chronograph, and these guns are generally regarded as the ones that are too powerful to fire a single dart. They're usually fitted with 3 or more barrels when firing the regular 1/2" darts, or they're modified to fire enormous foam rockets, or balls. This is done both for the ridiculous fun of it, and so that the skin is not pierced by a dart (we use home-made darts with hotglue tips, instead of the more expensive "nerf" brand ammo).

All of these toy guns have an extremely large air capacity, and are very, very easily modified to fire "unintended projectiles". In fact, they are specifically banned at the paintball fields that know of them, because they cause the paintballs to exceed the velocity limit. There is a lot that you can do with them, but if you intend to modify them, be careful, because they ARE powerful.

Nerf brand rocket launcher (the other guns included are generally useless):

"Buzz Bee" missile launcher:

(has been produced by many companies) missile launcher:

Jobar brand air toilet plunger (will launch almost anything that you stuff in the barrel you put on it):

Cobra brand air plunger (will launch ANYTHING that you stuff in the barrel you put on it):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BOKM26/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000QU1N2I&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0P923TYPZ6WQXFVYEDZ0

But enough about my other hobby... That's too bad about the rental G3's. I've seen those other types. There's a possibility I could simply pay full rental price, or I could borrow an airsoft gun from a friend of mine who is a collector. There's also a chance that the BAR that I helped him purchase will arrive before my G3, which would be neat to use with my WWI helmet (which I'm going to wear, anyways, because of its helmet compatibility).

Welcome to Spartan Assault! You seem to have done your homework on the subject of airsoft, that's rare for a newbie. ;) I'm not sure if the rentals are still available or not...what you can do is PM Fishman and see if he can bring them out.

EDIT: Did...somebody...say...B.A.R.?

After selling pics of Joker on his boat in his driveway on EbaY, the vehicle is fixed for now, so I will be out to play

Yup, a BAR. It's not the VFC brand version, but it's a "Matrix" (Not sure which REAL company) brand clone. Unfortunately, it seems to shoot about CBQ level FPS out of the box, and I can't seem to find any upgrade parts for it. And I'm pretty sure a BAR is the last thing you want in CBQ.

Edit: Just to clear up any possible confusion, the gun hasn't actually arrived in the mail, yet. It was a pre-order, also. Hopefully, Evike won't botch the order and forget to include the extra mags, which they promised to include for pre-order customers. Apparently from reading through the page, there's a hi-cap that comes stock, plus another hi-cap, plus three mid-caps.

Oh, and we got one of the last ones.  :P

So, it looks like I won't be getting ANY of my airsoft stuff until the T3 comes back in stock. It could be days, weeks, or months. But, until then I won't have anything to airsoft with.
