However...I don't know how well it would work for us, as the forest floor isn't exactly a hard surface most of the time.

If you hit a tree with the normal one the same thing will happen only it will wait until it is on the ground back at your feet to go off with the original. With this one you hit the tree it goes off and well, oh well.
