DROP THE BLACK L96 AND FORGET THE GHILLIE SUIT!Seriously guys, it takes a LOT of time and effort to become a half-decent sniper in airsoft. Using a BASR (Bolt Action Sniper Rifle) puts you at a distinct disadvantage to other players using AEGs with semi and full-auto capability. Let's look at your average sniper package from AirsoftGI:
http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_113&products_id=6576Black L96 (I see more of these than any other BASR on the field) with a scope. Gun is mid grade, nothing special: To truly reach its full potential it needs various parts (tightbore barrel, barrel spacers, hop-up tuned, etc) installed and a full tuneup done by an experienced airsoft technician. Lets say you got a deal, and all the parts and labor only cost you $100; this brings the total cost up to $255. This work will improve the range and accuracy of this rifle considerably, but you will still be getting outranged by various mid/high grade upgraded AEGs.
Now, lets go back to your cost at this point: $255. What kind of AEGs can you get for $255? How about a G&G M14:

Basically, the point of this post is this: Sniping in airsoft is difficult. Its not just about being able to outrange your oponent (which you probably won't anyway). There are many factors which I won't get into here. There are very few who are true airsoft snipers. Ghost. Classic and Fishman (when he brings out his BAR-10) are the ones who immediately pop into my mind. While all the other "snipers" are running around trying to snipe on the run like they're in a video game, these guys sit for hours sometimes just to get a single shot off.
Here's my (and many others) suggestion: Start out with a nice low-cost, mid-grade AEG such as a JG/G&G/CYMA, and go from there. If you then decide you want to put the time and effort into sniping, go for it. But don't run right out and buy a sniper and a ghillie suit.
Did I rant too much?
