Helicopter Rules
« on: June 27, 2009, 08:12:49 AM »
These are scenario based rules and will not be in place during every game. Rules may be altered by a scenarios rules.

might I add a little something?  teams have X amounts of RTO's.  only the RTO's have the radio channel and may command the choppers.

i would suggest having only one mission for the chopper by this I mean

no going to recon - hot.

its either your recon, assault, or transport. not a combination of them

That's how I was operating, it should be how the helicopters operate. I plan on trying to find more helo rules from other teams etc to see what else should be addressed.

Here is a section of an email from someone who attended today's event:
Quote
the main difference is, with our rules, anyone could pause the chopper via a shot for 30 seconds giving them a window of escape... During that 30 seconds the helicopter can not relay intel, but after the time,  can report what he saw or sees.. Then the helicopter could not be paused again for 5 min or so to prevent camping. If the helicopter is not willing to be shot at, then the rule would be he must respond to having the words "anti-aircraft" being shouted at him, then pause for his 30 seconds.

having only 1 player capable of "affecting" the helicopter I feel is a flaw to the idea. at the very least any player should be able to convince the helicopter that he might want to go fly someplace else, as in real life. small arms might not be able to take it down swiftly,,, but they can make it change course.  By our rules, the helicopter could not be shot down by a player, only by the other helicoper. this usualy ended up in both helicopters shooting each other down, However, if the helicopter is "paused" it can not return fire, so that adds a element of teamwork to pause the enemys helicopter in range of your own for the takedown.

another observation here on this style of play  would be the helicopers should not both be wearing the same color shirts,, that makes identifying your helicopter in the brush difficult.

What if the helo does recon, finishes, and then spots a group of hostiles. Could the helo call in via radio and get orders to attack?

I like that, I did it once. I was sent to recon Alpha so I reported back that there were 3 enemy targets in the base within the site. Then hovered and awaited further orders. Each helo only has a certain number of rockets, so you don't have to worry about them going crazy on you.

Lol, I have used a real heli! Well...R/C but still sweet! I played a game awhile back and since I knew how to fly VTOLs and helis I got command of our teams. Lots of fun and the VTOL had a small electric pistol attatched...didn't aim well though but it was cool, had a camera mounted on it and could fly easily through the paths and above the trees....I tried it once with my rc plane...didn't work well as I had to go too fast to catch anything on a small 4'' portable monitor.
