Anything that didnt use any sort of combustion/burning/explosion would be able to be reviewed and approved, but there is no such thing easily available. Anything else is illegal in Maine.

I forgot to reply to that topic. The state Fire Marshal got back to me on the pull ring smoke grenades that Federal Airsoft sells (they are not cold burning, but they contain the fire inside the grenade). He told me that they are still classified as a firework, but if they are being used on a real field (probably one with insurance) a permit can be acquired to use them (similar to the one that Bands use to set off pyrotechnic displays.) Sounds like a lot of work, and not really worth it. I do have a fog machine, timer, and portable power supply if we need some localized smoke for the game.

Have you ever used a smoke machine outside? Just curious if it really does anything.

okay here is a simple science lesson- smoke is the collection of airborne solid and liquid droplets/partials and most of it is just unburned fuel(what ever you are burning)....so the only way you can get ''cold smoke'' you be from a fog machine......we have already gone over this once in an other thread

your right about this... thanks for the lesson. i didnt know this since im a firefighter. but if the fuse is internal and nobody runs around with a lighter through the smoke there should be no ignition source.

Yeah, i used to use it for a Halloween display. The smoke covered my front lawn, and was thick enough to hide people in. It might be useful to simulate wreckage or something. I haven't brought the thing out in years though, hopefully it still works.

huh im seeing the rubble of a destroyed laboratory......hmmmmm?....but i have seen a smoke machine used outside and if you have enough fog juice (really just mineral oil i think) it does cover a good are and depending on how tall the person id you could cover someone up with this stuff.....i have also seen motion sensor ones...

I also think that even with a permit, every player would need a permit to carry and I have looked into permits/licensure and its a multi-year training thing.

my father (firefighter)  said we should look into what the fire dept uses... he did not expound on what it is... but said any spark would cause it to produce smoke, he stated they use it to simulate smoke for training.

Never seen it used, but then again under the description you gave it sounds like it would still be considered a firework. All the area training courses I have attended or been an instructor at have used either something that obscurs the SCBA mask, Fog Machines or actual fire in trainings.I'd be interested in knowing what he was talking about.
